Filllings

Fillings from your Oakridge Dentist

We offer traditional metal and mercury-free (composite) fillings at our South Vancouver dental practice, Smile A Lot Dental Centre. A filling is used to repair a tooth with decay, cracks, or fractures, etc. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed and then filled in with a filling. There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth. Composite fillings, along with silver amalgam fillings, are the most widely used today.

Metal Fillings

Traditional metal fillings, often called “amalgam” or “silver”, are the most common form of dental fillings. Because of their colour, they are used on the back teeth. They can be placed in one sitting, are inexpensive, and last a long time.  Most people choose to opt for tooth-coloured nowadays because of the cosmetic drawbacks of silver.

Mercury-Free Fillings

Mercury-free fillings, also called “composite” or “tooth-coloured”, are gaining popularity in dental office. Because composite fillings are tooth-coloured, they can be closely matched to the colour of your teeth, and are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth or the more visible areas of the teeth.

As with most dental restorations, composites are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced. They are very durable, giving you a long lasting, beautiful smile.

Reasons for composite fillings:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Closing space between two teeth
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Worn teeth
